Yesterday I saw the future

I was driving home from work yesterday afternoon when I saw two young girls sitting cross legged on the sidewalk under a shade tree. One had her phone balanced on her left knee and her friend was right beside her leaned over to watch her friend's phone. They were watching a video! What could be more private than sharing a video with your friend? Away from home and parents just the two of them. Like Steve Jobs said, this is the "post PC world". Anytime this phrase is mentioned the PC guys comment with rage. I don't think they get what the phrase is all about. There will still be desktop PCs there will still be laptops but I think they will go the way of the mainframe. Not long ago laptops surpassed desktops in sales and in no time smart phones blew by them both. The personal communication device is the future whether you like it or not. I intend to be a part of that future so I'm going out later today and buying an Android phone. I would buy an iPhone in a minute but the carriers want a small fortune for the data plans and I am ever the tightwad.

A Big Day

Yesterday I went to payroll at the city and signed all my retirement papers. We are scheduled for lift off!

OS X Lion

So yesterday I installed Lion on my iMac 2.8 GHz with only 2 gigs of memory. After having read the reviews I went ahead and ordered 4 gigs of memory to install later. I was somewhat put off by a few reviews which said it was dreadfully slow and I think their problem was they didn't wait until spotlight's indexing was completed. After the indexing was done the speed seemed to be the same to me. After consulting RoaringApps to make sure most of the apps I use worked I found that no one had reported on Nikon Capture NX2. I am relieved to report that it works fine.

Doddie is Back

A month ago we took Doddie back to the surgeon and after x-rays he pronounced we had done a great job! He said many folks give in and let the dog out of the cage during the eight week lock up. Doddie healed fine and after a month of rehab she seems to be 95%. I have had orthopedic surgery and the rehab takes a long time.

Under the Knife

As I write this I just received word that Doddie, our faithful companion has come through her knee surgery. We are supposed to pick her up tomorrow morning and then the long road to recovery starts. Eight weeks in a cage in the living room. The only time she can get out of the cage is bathroom breaks.

The Tax Man Cometh

So my real estate assessment came in last weekend. The value of my lot plus house went down $9,000.00 so I whipped out my pencil and paper. Where we were living the rent was $1600 per month so in three and a half years we would have paid $67,200. The assessment on the house went down $40,000 in that time. Add in $5,000 in real estate taxes and we are still ahead $12,000. Of course the rent at the Mayflower included all utilities so we are probably close to even.
